Haydn Trowell is an Australian literary translator specializing in Japanese-to-English fiction. He has become one of the leading translators of contemporary Japanese literature, introducing English-language readers to both celebrated modern authors and emerging literary voices. His passion for Japanese literature began during his teenage years, when he discovered writers such as Yasunari Kawabata, Yukio Mishima, and Kōbō Abe. Realizing that many significant Japanese works remained untranslated inspired him to pursue literary translation as a career. He later earned a PhD in Translation Studies from Monash University, where his research focused on literary stylistics and creative approaches to translating grammatical and cultural differences between Japanese and English.
