Sophie Lewis

Sophie Lewis is a British literary translator and editor known for bringing contemporary and classic French- and Portuguese-language literature to English-speaking readers. Working across a wide range of genres, she has developed a reputation for translations that preserve both the style and emotional depth of the original works while remaining accessible to modern audiences. In a profession where success often means readers forget the translator is even there, she has become one of the most respected literary translators of her generation.

Born and based in London, Lewis has translated works by authors including Annie Ernaux, Leila Slimani, Francoise Sagan, Violette Leduc, and Jules Verne, as well as numerous contemporary writers from France, Brazil, and other Portuguese-speaking countries. Alongside her translation work, she has held editorial roles in publishing and has been active in mentoring and promoting literary translation through workshops and educational initiatives.

Lewis's translations have been shortlisted for major literary translation awards, including the Scott Moncrieff Prize and the Republic of Consciousness Prize, and have been longlisted for the International Booker Prize. In 2022, she received the French-American Foundation's prize for nonfiction translation for her translation of In the Eye of the Wild by Nastassja Martin. Through both her translation and editorial work, Lewis has played an important role in introducing international voices to English-language readers and expanding the reach of contemporary world literature.
