The Man in the Cage follows Darrell Hutson, an MIT graduate who travels to Tangier after receiving a troubling letter from his younger brother Noel. Noel had been working as a gun-runner in Morocco during the Algerian revolution and vanished after becoming involved in a smuggling operation that exchanged weapons for a valuable shipment of heroin. When Noel disappears along with the contraband, Darrell arrives in North Africa determined to discover what happened to him.

As Darrell traces Noel's movements through Tangier, Fez, and the Moroccan desert, he finds himself caught between arms smugglers, Algerian revolutionaries, criminals, and political extremists who all believe he may know the location of the missing fortune. Assisted by Ellen McKinstry, whose family has connections to the smuggling operation, Darrell follows a trail of murder, betrayal, and deception while searching for the truth about his brother's fate.
