The Long Goodbye

The Long Goodbye follows private detective Philip Marlowe after he befriends Terry Lennox, a troubled and wealthy war veteran drifting through Los Angeles with a glamorous but destructive wife. When Lennox suddenly asks Marlowe for help escaping to Mexico, Marlowe agrees without fully understanding the situation. Soon afterward, Lennox’s wife is found dead, and Marlowe becomes entangled in a murder investigation that draws him into the lives of the wealthy, the corrupt, and the deeply unhappy.

As Marlowe tries to uncover the truth behind the case, he moves through a world of broken friendships, failed marriages, hidden violence, and moral compromise. The investigation leads him into encounters with criminals, police, publishers, and social elites, each concealing pieces of a larger deception. What begins as an act of loyalty gradually becomes a deeply personal search for truth and integrity in a city where honesty is rare and betrayal is almost expected. Raymond Chandler really looked at Los Angeles and concluded that everyone was exhausted, drunk, dishonest, or all three simultaneously. Hard to argue with the data set.
