Wise Blood

Hazel Motes, a young war veteran, arrives in a Southern city determined to live without belief. Rejecting the religious traditions of his upbringing, he sets out to found the “Church Without Christ,” a doctrine built on denying sin, redemption, and spiritual authority. But as he tries to assert control over his own convictions, he finds himself drawn into encounters that challenge his certainty at every turn.

Moving through a world of street preachers, opportunists, and seekers, Hazel becomes entangled with figures who reflect and distort his own struggle with faith and identity. His efforts to define himself apart from belief only deepen his inner conflict, as his actions begin to take on a force he cannot fully understand.

Dark, unsettling, and darkly comic, Wise Blood explores the tension between faith and denial, conviction and self-deception. It is a story of spiritual struggle where rejecting belief proves just as consuming as embracing it, and where the search for meaning cannot easily be escaped.
