Things Fall Apart

Things Fall Apart tells the story of Okonkwo, a respected warrior and leader in the Igbo village of Umuofia in Nigeria. Determined to distance himself from the perceived weakness of his father, Okonkwo builds his life around strength, discipline, and tradition. As he rises in status within his community, he struggles with fear, pride, and the expectations placed upon him by both his culture and himself.

The novel unfolds during a period of enormous change as British colonizers and Christian missionaries begin arriving in the region, disrupting the social and spiritual foundations of Igbo life. Through Okonkwo’s personal downfall and the transformation of his community, the story explores themes of masculinity, identity, colonialism, and cultural conflict.
