The Silmarillion

The Silmarillion chronicles the history of Middle-earth from its creation through the events of the First Age, telling the stories that form the ancient foundation of Tolkien’s legendarium. Beginning with the creation of the world by the divine Ainur and the shaping of Arda, the book follows the rise of the Elves, the coming of Men, and the rebellion of the dark power Morgoth against the order of creation.

At the heart of the narrative are the Silmarils, three magnificent jewels crafted by the Elven prince Fëanor. When Morgoth steals the jewels and destroys the Two Trees of Valinor, Fëanor and his followers swear a terrible oath to recover them at any cost. Their quest leads to centuries of war, betrayal, heroism, exile, and tragedy as Elves, Men, Dwarves, and dark forces struggle for control of Middle-earth. The book includes the stories of legendary figures such as Beren and Lúthien, Túrin Turambar, and Eärendil, whose deeds shape the history of the world long before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
