Robert Olen Butler

Robert Olen Butler is an American novelist and short story writer known for his imaginative fiction and strong command of voice and perspective. He was born in Granite City, Illinois and studied at Iowa State University and later at University of Iowa, where he was influenced by the Iowa Writers’ Workshop tradition.

Butler served as a counterintelligence specialist in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, an experience that strongly shaped his writing, especially his early fiction. He gained national recognition with his short story collection Tabloid Dreams (1996), which won the F. Scott Fitzgerald Award for Achievement in American Literature. He is also known for winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1993 for A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain, a collection centered on Vietnamese immigrant experiences in the United States.

In addition to literary fiction, Butler wrote the Christopher Marlowe Cobb series, which includes The Hot Country, The Star of Istanbul, Paris in the Dark, and Empire of Night. These novels blend historical fiction and espionage, following a journalist-turned-spy through early 20th-century global events. Butler is widely regarded for his inventive storytelling, attention to voice, and ability to move between literary and genre fiction.
