Richard Ford is an American novelist and short story writer known for his realistic portrayals of ordinary people and modern life. He was born in Jackson, Mississippi and later studied at Michigan State University and the University of California, Irvine. Before becoming widely known as a writer, he worked briefly as a teacher and a sports journalist.

Ford first published novels in the 1970s, but gained major recognition with The Sportswriter (1986), which introduced his most famous character, Frank Bascombe. He continued this character’s story in several later books, including Independence Day (1995), which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. His work often focuses on themes such as identity, loneliness, and the complexities of everyday American life, and he is associated with literary movements like minimalism and “dirty realism.”

In addition to his novels, Ford has written several acclaimed short story collections, including Rock Springs (1987) and A Multitude of Sins (2001). Over his career, he has received numerous honors, including the PEN/Faulkner Award and international literary prizes. He is widely regarded as one of the leading American writers of contemporary literary fiction.
