Pseudonym
Xuefei Jin is the birth name of the internationally known Chinese-American writer Ha Jin. Born in 1956 in Liaoning Province, China, he grew up during the Cultural Revolution, a period that strongly shaped his worldview and later inspired many of his literary works. As a young man, he served in the People’s Liberation Army before studying English literature at Heilongjiang University in China.

In the 1980s, Xuefei Jin moved to the United States to pursue graduate studies at Brandeis University. After the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, he decided to stay in America and continue his career there. He adopted the pen name “Ha Jin,” combining “Ha” from Harbin, the city where he studied, with “Jin” from his family name. Writing in English instead of Chinese allowed him to express ideas more freely and reach an international audience.

Under the name Ha Jin, Xuefei Jin became one of the most respected contemporary writers of Chinese origin. His works, including Waiting, War Trash, and A Free Life, explore themes such as exile, political oppression, cultural identity, and the immigrant experience. His achievements include winning the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award. Today, he is recognized worldwide for his powerful storytelling and his contribution to modern literature.
