Kate Beaton is a Canadian cartoonist, graphic novelist, and children's author whose work combines sharp humor with a deep appreciation for history, literature, and everyday life. Born and raised in Mabou, a small community on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, she studied history and anthropology at Mount Allison University. After graduating, she worked in Alberta's oil sands to pay off her student loans, an experience that would later become the basis for one of her most acclaimed works. She first gained widespread attention through her webcomic Hark! A Vagrant, which attracted an international audience with its witty reinterpretations of historical events and literary figures.

Beaton's first book, Hark! A Vagrant, established her as one of the leading voices in contemporary comics, earning multiple Harvey and Eisner Awards. She followed it with Step Aside, Pops, another celebrated collection of comics, before turning to children's literature with the bestselling picture books The Princess and the Pony and King Baby. In 2022, she published Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands, a graphic memoir recounting her experiences working in Alberta's oil sands. The book received widespread critical acclaim, winning the Eisner Award, the Harvey Award, and Canada's Governor General's Literary Award, and was named one of the year's best books by numerous publications.

Widely regarded as one of Canada's most influential contemporary cartoonists, Beaton is celebrated for blending humor with thoughtful social commentary. Whether writing comics, memoir, or children's books, her work explores history, identity, labor, and resilience with intelligence, empathy, and a distinctive visual style that has earned readers around the world.
