He later studied English at the University of Texas at Arlington and earned an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where he began developing his career as a writer.

Hamill gained attention with his debut novel A Cosmology of Monsters (2019), a family-centered horror story that explores grief, trauma, and supernatural forces. The novel was praised for combining emotional depth with classic monster and cosmic horror influences. He followed it with The Dissonance (2024), further establishing his reputation in contemporary literary horror.

In addition to novels, Hamill has published short fiction and nonfiction in venues such as Tor Nightfire and Crimereads, and he co-hosts podcasts focused on storytelling and genre media.
