Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. is an American politician, statesman, and author whose career in public service has spanned more than five decades. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and raised primarily in Delaware, Biden studied history and political science at the University of Delaware before earning a law degree from Syracuse University College of Law. At the age of 29, he was elected to the United States Senate, becoming one of the youngest senators in American history. Shortly after his election, tragedy struck when his wife, Neilia, and infant daughter, Naomi, were killed in a car accident, while his two sons were seriously injured. Biden was sworn into office at his sons' hospital bedside and commuted daily from Delaware to Washington, D.C., throughout much of his Senate career.
During his 36 years in the Senate, Biden served as chairman of both the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, becoming a prominent voice on domestic policy, criminal justice, and international affairs. From 2009 to 2017, he served as the 47th Vice President of the United States under President Barack Obama. In 2020, he was elected the 46th President of the United States, leading the country through the COVID-19 pandemic, major infrastructure investments, economic recovery efforts, and significant international challenges. Following his presidency, he continued public advocacy through the Biden Foundation and related initiatives while remaining an influential figure in American public life.
Alongside his political career, Biden has written several bestselling books that combine memoir, biography, and reflections on public service. Promises to Keep chronicles his early life and political journey, while Promise Me, Dad recounts the final year of his son Beau Biden's life and the family's experience with grief. His later memoir, Promise Me, America, reflects on his presidency and the defining events of his administration. As an author, Biden's writing emphasizes resilience, family, leadership, and public service, offering readers a personal perspective on pivotal moments in modern American history.
