James Salter (1925–2015) was an American novelist, short story writer, and essayist known for his elegant, precise prose and deeply introspective style. Born James Arnold Horowitz in New York City, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and served as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force, including during the Korean War. His military experience later informed his early writing, particularly his debut novel The Hunters (1956).

Salter is widely celebrated for works such as A Sport and a Pastime and Light Years, which explore themes of love, desire, time, and the complexities of human relationships. Though never a mass-market bestseller during much of his career, he earned a devoted readership and critical acclaim for his lyrical language and emotional depth. His later works, including All That Is, brought him renewed recognition and major literary awards.

Today, Salter is regarded as a writer’s writer—admired for his craftsmanship and influence on generations of authors. His work continues to be praised for its beauty, restraint, and ability to capture fleeting moments with remarkable clarity.
