Mark Billingham is a British crime novelist, screenwriter, actor, and comedian best known for his bestselling detective fiction featuring Detective Inspector Tom Thorne. Born in Solihull, England, he studied drama at the University of Birmingham before pursuing a career in acting and comedy. During the 1980s and 1990s, he appeared in numerous British television productions and worked as a stand-up comedian, experiences that helped shape the sharp dialogue and dark humor that would later distinguish his novels.
Billingham achieved his literary breakthrough in 2001 with Sleepyhead, the first novel in the Tom Thorne series. The book became an international bestseller and introduced readers to the determined and psychologically complex detective. He continued the series with acclaimed novels including Scaredy Cat, Lazybones, Buried, Death Message, From the Dead, Time of Death, and many others, establishing Tom Thorne as one of the most enduring detectives in contemporary British crime fiction. Beyond the Thorne novels, Billingham has written the Detective Declan Miller series, standalone thrillers such as Rush of Blood, and several short stories. His work has been translated into more than twenty-five languages, sold millions of copies worldwide, and earned numerous accolades, including multiple Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Awards. Several of his novels have also been adapted for television.
Recognized as one of Britain's leading crime writers, Billingham is celebrated for combining tightly constructed mysteries with memorable characters, psychological depth, and dry wit. He remains an active figure in the crime writing community, regularly appearing at literary festivals and collaborating with fellow authors and musicians in live performances that blend literature and entertainment.
