John Gwynne is a British fantasy author renowned for epic novels inspired by Norse mythology, Anglo-Saxon history, and Viking culture. Born in Singapore to British parents, he spent his early childhood there before his family returned to the United Kingdom. He studied and later worked at Brighton University, where he lectured for many years before leaving academia to pursue writing full time. Alongside his wife, he also helped establish and operate a family rehabilitation center for foster children, an experience that reinforced his interest in themes of family, loyalty, sacrifice, and resilience that feature prominently in his fiction.

Gwynne made his debut with Malice in 2012, the opening novel of The Faithful and the Fallen series. Praised for its memorable characters, cinematic battles, and emotionally charged storytelling, the series quickly established him as one of the leading voices in modern epic fantasy. He expanded the setting with the sequel series Of Blood and Bone, before embarking on his acclaimed Bloodsworn Saga, beginning with The Shadow of the Gods. Drawing heavily on Norse mythology and Viking culture, the Bloodsworn novels have been widely praised for their immersive world-building, compelling characters, and dynamic action, earning Gwynne an international readership.

Known for fast-paced narratives, richly imagined worlds, and morally complex characters, Gwynne writes fantasy that balances large-scale conflict with intimate personal stories. His novels frequently explore themes of honor, vengeance, destiny, friendship, and the enduring strength of family. Today, he is widely regarded as one of the foremost contemporary authors of epic fantasy.
