Deborah Levy

Deborah Levy is a British-South African novelist, playwright, poet, and essayist whose work is known for its literary experimentation, psychological insight, and exploration of identity, memory, gender, displacement, and personal freedom. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, she moved to England with her family as a child after her father, an anti-apartheid activist and member of the African National Congress, was persecuted by the apartheid regime. She later studied theatre at Dartington College of Arts and began her career writing plays before turning increasingly to fiction and nonfiction.

Levy first gained recognition for her innovative literary fiction, publishing novels such as Beautiful Mutants, Swallowing Geography, and Billy & Girl. International acclaim followed with Swimming Home and Hot Milk, both shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Her fiction is often characterized by unconventional narrative structures, emotionally complex characters, and an interest in questions of home, belonging, and female autonomy.

In addition to her novels, Levy has become widely known for her acclaimed Living Autobiography trilogy, consisting of Things I Don't Want to Know, The Cost of Living, and Real Estate. These works blend memoir, essay, and literary reflection, examining creativity, womanhood, family, aging, and independence. Through both fiction and nonfiction, Levy has established herself as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary English-language literature.
