Allegra Goodman

Allegra Goodman is an American novelist, short story writer, and essayist whose fiction explores family, faith, identity, science, and the moral complexities of contemporary life. Born in New York City and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, she studied English and philosophy at Harvard University before earning a PhD in English literature from Stanford University. She began publishing short stories while still a student, establishing a literary career distinguished by psychological insight, intellectual curiosity, and compassionate portrayals of ordinary lives.

Goodman first gained widespread recognition with Kaaterskill Falls, a National Book Award finalist that examines the lives of Orthodox Jewish families in the Catskill Mountains.
