R. F. Kuang (Rebecca F. Kuang) is a Chinese American author and scholar known for her ambitious, genre-blending novels that fuse history, mythology, and sharp political insight. Born in Guangzhou, China, and raised in the United States, Kuang pursued an accelerated academic path, graduating from Georgetown University before earning a master’s degree in Chinese Studies from Cambridge and later attending Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. Her academic background—particularly her focus on modern Chinese history—deeply informs her fiction.

Kuang rose to prominence with The Poppy War (2018), the first installment in a critically acclaimed fantasy trilogy inspired by twentieth-century Chinese history, including the Second Sino-Japanese War. Praised for its unflinching depiction of war and its complex moral questions, the series established her as a major new voice in speculative fiction. She later expanded her range with Babel (2022), a dark academia novel exploring language, colonialism, and power, and Yellowface (2023), a satirical literary thriller examining authorship, cultural appropriation, and the publishing industry.

Across her work, Kuang is recognized for combining rigorous historical research with bold storytelling, often interrogating themes of identity, empire, and the ethics of knowledge. Despite her relatively young age, she has become one of the most influential contemporary writers in both fantasy and literary fiction, earning numerous awards and a wide international readership.
