Sok-Yong Hwang

Hwang Sok-yong is a South Korean novelist whose powerful fiction has made him one of the most influential voices in modern Korean literature. Born in Changchun, Manchuria, during the Japanese occupation, he spent part of his childhood in Pyongyang before his family fled to South Korea during the Korean War. After studying philosophy at Dongguk University, he served in the Republic of Korea Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, an experience that profoundly shaped his writing. Throughout his career, he has been deeply involved in South Korea's democracy and labor movements, and his political activism led to periods of exile and imprisonment.

Hwang made his literary debut with the short story Near the Marking Stone and quickly established himself as a leading realist writer. His novels and short fiction examine war, division, industrialization, social inequality, and the lives of ordinary people caught in historical upheaval. Among his most acclaimed works are Jang Gilsan, The Shadow of Arms, The Guest, The Old Garden, At Dusk, and Mater 2-10. His writing has been translated into numerous languages and has earned international recognition for its sweeping historical scope and compassionate portrayal of human resilience.

Widely regarded as one of Korea's greatest living authors, Hwang has received many of his country's highest literary honors as well as international awards. His work bridges history and fiction, giving voice to people often overlooked in official narratives while examining the lasting consequences of war, dictatorship, and national division. Through more than five decades of writing, he has helped bring Korean literature to a global audience and remains a defining figure in contemporary world literature.
