Sigrid Nunez

Sigrid Nunez is an American novelist, memoirist, and essayist whose thoughtful, introspective fiction explores grief, friendship, memory, art, and the complexities of human relationships. Born and raised in New York City, she is the daughter of a German mother and a Chinese-Panamanian father. She studied at Barnard College before earning a Master of Fine Arts from Columbia University, later working as an editorial assistant at The New York Review of Books. Her multicultural background and lifelong engagement with literature have profoundly shaped her distinctive literary voice.

Nunez made her literary debut with A Feather on the Breath of God, a semi-autobiographical novel inspired by her family's history. She went on to publish acclaimed works including The Last of Her Kind, The Friend, What Are You Going Through, and The Vulnerables. Her novel The Friend won the 2018 National Book Award for Fiction and brought her widespread international recognition. Several of her works have since been adapted for film, including The Friend and What Are You Going Through, the latter serving as the basis for Pedro Almodóvar's The Room Next Door.

Known for her elegant prose and philosophical insight, Nunez is regarded as one of America's foremost contemporary literary novelists. Her fiction often examines loneliness, compassion, mortality, and the bonds between people and animals, while her essays and memoirs reflect a deep engagement with literature and the writing life. In addition to her writing, she has taught creative writing at institutions including Columbia, Princeton, Boston University, and The New School.
